In its monthly analysis of the top 50 web properties, comScore found that Google and Microsoft stayed on top. However, retail websites received a major push during the holidays, as shoppers searched the web for the best deals on gifts.

Major ecommerce vendors, such as Best Buy, Macy’s and Kohls, received major traffic increases during the month. According to comScore, ShopLocal.com saw the largest jump with 132 percent more traffic in November compared to October. While the figures for December are not available yet, it’s likely that these websites will see even larger increases.

Developing web content that focuses on the holidays and various offers for consumers can help businesses improve their search ranking during especially busy shopping periods. The position of Google as the No. 1 web property further illustrates the value of content marketing campaigns aimed at improving a website’s SEO.

Target web properties jumped from the No. 46 spot in October to No. 26 in November, as the retail chain was one of the most popular ecommerce companies during the month.

Brafton reported recently that December was a record month for ecommerce shopping. Among the most successful days during the month was Green Monday, December 13, which generated more than $1 billion in sales and grew 15 percent from 2010.
