The Tweet button and the Like button are now part of the American consumer vernacular, and website owners might make note that ShareThis also seems to roll off the tongue – and it could help content spread beyond a web page. The social plugin with a self-explanatory name is gaining rapid adoption, and today it announced a new CMO who hopes to make the tool even more effective for content sharing.

ShareThis has appointed Kristen Fergason to the position of CMO. Fergason is a former marketing executive with Yahoo (which currently boasts the most visited sites on the web). She will be working to improve the outreach and execution of ShareThis, while also fine-tuning data affiliated with the plugin to both offer maximum analytics and maintain consumers’ rights to privacy.

Fergason expresses her enthusiasm to join the ShareThis team at a time when the company is “growing exponentially.” She says, “ShareThis is firmly planted at the intersection of social interaction and online economics, so there's an enormous opportunity to build awareness and success in the market.”

Marketers who offer quality web content might also consider that they can use the plugin to build awareness around their brands. ShareThis is currently available on nearly 1 million websites and reaches more than 400 million web users.

Investing in quality content development will be key to getting content shared on the web, as well as making it visible in search engines, thanks to the most recent updates to the Google algorithm that fight spam.

Marketers with shareable content might consider adding ShareThis and other leading social plugins to their sites to maximize reach. As Brafton has reported, social plugins are proven to drive lifts in traffic.
