Twitter has been generating plenty of buzz this week, thanks to reports on several milestones for the company as it celebrates its fifth birthday. One more to add to the list is Twitter's debut on comScore's list of top web properties during February 2011.

The microblogging site came in at No. 49 on the list with 23.1 million unique visitors. Notably, the company made it onto the rankings during the same month that it generated more than 4,000 Tweets per second during the Super Bowl.

Yahoo sites still took the No. 1 spot, after several consecutive months of dominating, and the number of visitors remained fairly constant month-over-month. Google sites, which were right on Yahoo's trail in January with 178.5 million unique visitors, fell to approximately 175.2 million unique visitors last month. Microsoft sites (third) also lost visitors last month, going from 176.8 million unique visitors in January to 168.8 million in February.

Social sites, though lagging behind the top three, roughly maintained their numbers of visitors by comScore's measure. Facebook maintained its fourth place ranking, with just a slight decrease from 153.0 million unique visitors at the start of 2012 to approximately 151.0 million last month. LinkedIn held steady at No. 36, with 28.3 million visitors (compared to 29.8 last month).

While Google sites dropped in terms of visitors as Facebook remained relatively consistent, it’s worth noting that a recent study indicates Google is still the leading traffic referral source for top media sites. As Brafton reported, Facebook is making gains as a traffic referral site (indicating the value of distributing content via social media), but the search giant is still king.
