As an increasing amount of Android-powered smartphones and tablets are upgraded to Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich, Google recently announced some other new features for Android users, including improved mobile search apps. Simpler on-the-go search options may make Google SEO even more important for marketers hoping to catch the interest of mobile audiences.

According to software engineer Matt Inwood writing for the Google Mobile Blog, the new Google Search app for Android was released to make mobile search faster and easier. As more consumers begin upgrading to smartphones, a seamless search app will help Android differentiate itself further from its competitors, namely Apple. It will also help Google secure its place as the clear cut mobile search leader.

Inwood wrote that Android’s new search app has been simplified with a smarter suggestion tool. On the surface, it performs the same way as previous apps, but most of the improvements are aimed at just making the app better.

The sheer growth of Android in the last year is reason enough for marketers to consider mobile search when launching their SEO campaigns. Market research firm comScore found that Android-powered devices currently account for more than 46 percent of the 91 million and counting smartphones in use the United States.
