Microsoft's search engine, Bing, has continued to show promise in the search market, gaining more share during the month of June, a new comScore report indicates.

Bing grew 0.3 percent over the course of the month, from 14.1 to 14.4 percent, and was the only major search engine to improve its position in explicit core searches. Microsoft's search engine continues to edge closer to Yahoo, which remained consist month-over-month at 15.9 percent. Meanwhile, Google was also unchanged at the No. 1 spot, accounting for 65.5 percent of explicit core searches

Microsoft's gains largely came from losses experienced by less influential search portals. For example, AOL sites lost 0.1 percent of their share in the search market in June, dropping from 1.5 to 1.4 percent. This might indicate to SEO marketers that internet users who are trying new search portals are adopting Bing, and optimizing site content for Microsoft's portal may become an increasingly important to brand visibility.

Overall, more than 16.7 billion explicit core searches were performed in June, remaining fairly consistent from May. More than 2.4 billion of these queries were conducted via Bing, and Google accounted for 10.9 billion.

While it may not seem as if Bing is making huge gains on its well-established competitor Google, a separate report from Rosetta notes that Microsoft's portal is making waves in some sectors. For example, in the financial services vertical, Bing-powered searches account for 40 percent of all queries.
