Google held its position as the number one web property ranking during the month of August, according to new figures from comScore.

The online analyst’s latest Media Metrix notes the search giant drew 144.7 million Americans during the course of the month.

Yahoo! sites came in second, attracting 141.5 million people.

Microsoft rounded out the top three, with 123.5 million users.

Platform-A, which includes Quigo, Advertising.com and other networks, was at the top of the Ad Focus ranking for the month, reaching 90 percent of the approximately 189 million Americans who are online.

Google Ad Network came in second, with a reach of 156.4 million users and Yahoo! Network took third place, reaching 156.2 million people during the month.

Commenting on other findings from the survey, Jack Flanagan, executive vice-president of comScore Media Metrix, said: "The Olympics dominated the headlines in August and Americans’ internet activity reflected their keen interest in their country’s performance at the games."

In recent days, comScore noted mobile search’s increasing popularity and frequency of use in the US.
