Placing content on Google News can be a highly effective strategy for search engine optimization (SEO), but it comes with its own set of challenges, according to the SEO Consult blog.

SEO Consult says that "Google News reaches more people than any other individual news source in the world. The fact that articles are selected by an algorithm makes the site even more attractive, as you don’t have to spend time courting stressed-out journalists and editors. This algorithm also makes things more difficult, which is why SEO experts have spent considerable time figuring out how to optimize for Google News."

Getting into Google News in the first place can be a challenge, experts say, since the site only displays results from a set – though frequently changing – list of authoritative sources from around the web. SEO Consult says that this means that search engine optimization (SEO) content must compete with that produced by professional journalists.

Currently, there seems to be no serious threat to Google News’ primacy as a news source – and search engine optimization (SEO) target – but there have been disputes between the search engine and some content providers, such as Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.
