While some newspapers – like Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal – have fought tooth and nail with Google, others are beginning to warm up to search engine optimization (SEO), according to a recent article from Search Engine Land.

Two of the three biggest newspaper publishers in the United States are offering search engine optimization (SEO) services to small businesses, reports Search Engine Land. Now, Gannett Newspapers, the publisher behind USA Today, has entered the mix, selling digital marketing services to businesses based out of Phoenix, Arizona.

GannettLocal specifies the services it provides on its website. The firm offers search engine optimization (SEO) for all three major search engines, location-finding services tailored for Google Maps, and print advertisements in the Arizona Republic.

"GannettLocal is a new business model focused on working with small and midsize business to provide them a high-touch marketing consultation and a suite of multiplatform solutions (search engine marketing, email, digital display, website, and geo-targeted print/flyers) delivered by a team of dedicated experts over the phone," said GannettLocal chief Brad Robertson in a recent memo.

The importance of search engine optimization (SEO) was emphasized in a recent report from Chitika. According to the report, the top spot on Google receives double the traffic of the second result.
