A report from Nielsen found that Facebook is the most popular app among users of Android-powered smartphones and tablets. While the Android Market, which is considered an app in its own right, is the most used, Facebook is the most popular in terms of actual third-party software.

According to Nielsen, 80 percent of Android users between the ages of 18 and 24 use the application, making it the top app among this age group. Eighty-one percent of Android-powered device owners between 25 and 34 access Facebook, while 77 percent of those between 35 and 44 access the device.

Social media marketing campaigns have received a substantial push from increased mobile access. As more users begin accessing social media content on their handsets, the potential reach of these campaigns grows as well. This also necessitates constant social content as mobile consumers can check their accounts virtually any time from anywhere.

Email marketing campaigns could also receive a boost from mobile application use. Among all three demographics included in the study, Gmail and Yahoo Mail were regularly accessed by at least 13 percent of Android users.

The growth in mobility has also impacted SEO campaigns, as Brafton reported that nearly one-third of smartphone owners regularly access search on their handsets. Among the demographics studied by Nielsen, at least 75 percent of Android users access Google mobile search regularly.
