Twitter celebrated its 5th birthday last week shortly after announcing that more than 200 million individual tweets are made on a daily basis. The announcement indicates that social content marketing is reaching new highs.

Moreover, 350 billion Tweets are delivered each day by the service. A “delivery” is defined as the appearance of a tweet to a follower's timeline, a company spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times.

“Halfway through 2011, users on Twitter are now sending 200 million Tweets per day. For context on the speed of Twitter’s growth, in January of 2009, users sent 2 million Tweets a day, and one year ago they posted 65 million a day,” Twitter wrote on the company blog.

The growing volume of tweets attests to the rampant adoption of Twitter among consumers, making it a good channel to engage prospective buyers. On July 14, the company noted that more than 600,000 people signed up for accounts on the social network, and Brafton has reported that 13 percent of U.S. adults use Twitter as of last May.

Brafton recently reported on the importance of having a strong presence on Twitter. A recent survey conducted by inboxQ notes Twitter users are more likely to both follow and buy from a company that helps them answer product-related inquiries. Additionally, 80 percent of respondents say they trust a business' opinion on Twitter just as much – if not more so – than their friends' opinions.
