Search engine firm Yahoo! and Intel have previewed plans for a television application framework called the Widget Channel.
The two companies state that the platform will allow users to enjoy internet applications designed for the television while watching television programs.
Consumers will be able to interact with a set of ‘TV Widgets’ – a set of internet applications designed to enhance and complement the traditional television watching experience.
Eric Kim, senior vice-president of Intel and general manager of its digital home group, states that television will "fundamentally change" the way in which people experience the internet.
"Our close work has produced an exciting application framework upon which the industry can collaborate, innovate and differentiate," he adds.
In recent days, Yahoo! announced that it is providing users with open access to its Buzz application, allowing them to ‘buzz up’ content from any publisher on the internet.
