Twitter has announced a Follow Button – a new social plugin that might help brands build their follower bases. Internet marketers might consider that converting site visitors into Twitter followers increases engagement opportunities, which could help convert them into customers.

The company explains that the Follow Button is now available to publishers and brands. In fact, 50 sites adopted the button today. Those looking to configure the social plugin on their sites can find it at a special Follow Button resource page.

Twitter claims that the Follow Button will help marketers find audiences who are “much more likely to retweet and engage with your Tweets, and to repeatedly visit your website.”

Of course, this seems to assume that marketers have a social sharing strategy in place in which they distribute fresh site content to their Twitter audience. Sharing fresh Tweets should already be a top priority for site and social marketers – Brafton has reported that boring or repetitive Tweets are the No. 1 reason people unfollow brands.
