While Facebook is the de facto social media marketing tool for most businesses, Twitter is hoping to become more relevant to brands (and users) through the addition of a new social discovery feature – the Activity tab.

The Activity tab, which was announced in the company's blog earlier this week, gives users a more complete view of what their acquaintances are sharing on the social network. The section enables members to see the content the people they follow have marked as “Favorite” tweets and what they've retweeted. It also shows which brands and individuals they have recently followed.

For brands, this places greater emphasis on publishing high-value content on Twitter. Now that users can more easily see the content their friends are engaging, businesses can increase their exposure by creating insightful content that will be shared.

Twitter also launched the @username tab, which allows brands to better filter tweets visible in their timelines to see interactions pertaining to them.

“You can now see when someone favorites or retweets one of your Tweets. You can also learn which Tweets are most interesting and inspiring to the people you follow,” the company explained on its blog.

Twitter celebrated its fifth birthday last month. The social network has come a long way over the past five years, with Brafton reporting the company delivers more than 350 billion tweets daily.
