Businesses hoping to boost their website’s ranking must be wary of publishing duplicated content on their pages, two experts have warned.

Jessica Cox and Michelle Pierce, writing for online publication Promotion World, warned that not only do search engines penalize sites which they spot duplicating content but it can frustrate consumers as well.

They questioned: "If you visited a site and saw the same article on three pages, even if the major keywords were changed (‘constructing Acme widgets’ instead of ‘building Acme widgets’), wouldn’t you feel cheated?"

It is important to remember that search engines exist in order to provide browsers with relevant and useful content quickly, the commentators explained.

A good search engine optimization firm will use compelling, relevant and keyword-rich text to achieve high rankings, rather than promise results within hours through a method which could see a site blacklisted, they concluded.

Recently, Wendy Sutro, president of Search Circus, told 4Hoteliers that beginning a company blog is one useful way of ensuring pages are filled with relevant and interesting content.

Furthermore, she explained, providing articles this way can help a firm build inbound links, which also boost their search ranking.
