Google+ announces integration with content aggregation app Flipboard

Google has integrated Google+ with Flipboard, a mobile social dashboard, which some think could be the first in a long line of partnerships that make content shared on the network more accessible.

Marketers sharing content on Google+ received goods news at Le Web ’12 in London from Bradley Horowitz, Google’s senior vice president of product management. At the event, Horowitz said that Google+ will soon be available on Flipboard, which has become an increasingly popular tool for smartphone owners and will make sharing Google+ content easier for users.

According to Horowitz, more announcements regarding Google+ are coming in the next few days, as Google I/O is set to kick off. However, the revelation of Flipboard integration is a major step for the social network.

Google+ has struggled to generate a consistent user base since its launch nearly one year ago. Providing users with easier access to the platform through the partnership with Flipboard can help generate more Google+ activity and sharing around content on the network. While Google+ has had mobile applications on the iPhone and Android-powered devices for some time, the apps haven’t had the impact on activity that Google expected.

According to the Next Web, this could be the first step in a series of integrations for Google+ and its API. Last year, Brafton reported that Google+’s API was made available for HootSuite users, but not much else has come since that announcement.

Despite the issues with activity, Google has continued to invest time and resources into Google+ – and marketers may take this as a sign that the search giant’s social network will become increasingly important to their SEO efforts. Most recently, Brafton reported that Google has leveraged its acquisition of Zagat by creating Google+ Local, which joins the social network and Google Places.
