Although much has been made of print and online news outlets using search engine optimization (SEO) to increase traffic, not much has been mentioned about the TV industry and their attempts but CBS News unveiled a new website with SEO in mind.

CBS launched its new website this week and in an interview with, Mark Larkin, vice president of programming and operations at, says that the new strategy of gaining viewers focuses on search engine optimization (SEO) and original content.

"[W]e have optimized this site for SEO in an attempt to kind of leverage that as a traffic growth mechanism or tool and we’ll continue to look into partnership opportunities for ourselves to grow relationships but I think really, it rests on the original content," he told

News organizations appear to be increasingly using search engine optimization (SEO) as a way of increasing traffic online as the web continues to be overloaded with news and content.

Earlier this week Thomson Reuters announced that a number of news organizations, including the Huffington Post, would be using the company’s OpenCalais service in part to increase search engine optimization. CNET, which is owned by CBS, also uses the service.
