Small businesses can use the power of the internet to help level the playing field with large corporations, and according to one expert their best option is to use search engine optimization (SEO) in addition to creating and marketing original content on their sites.

In his small business column for USA Today, Steve Strauss writes that most small business owners have heard of the need to use search engine optimization (SEO) and social media tools like Twitter, but he says one of the simplest ways they can increase visibility is through original content like blogs, articles or newsletters.

According to Strauss, marketing expert John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing told him that the single most important thing a business can do to increase their online visibility is to "commit to creating content regularly and putting it online."

But using tools like search engine optimization (SEO) is only one part of a good online marketing strategy, according to Al Scillitani of Marketing Don.

In a recent post on Marketing Pilgrim, Scillitani wrote that businesses looking to increase their online presence should use a more "holistic" approach to marketing and incorporate things like organic search, social media and paid search into their campaign.
