Some companies looking for search engine optimization (SEO) services might do better to consider some more basic aspects of their unsuccessful website, according to Eric Enge of Search Engine Watch.

Enge writes that "SEO is an important endeavor, no doubt. And, I’m a huge fan (it’s how I make my living). But, if you have a web site that looks like a clown threw up on it, and have 302 redirected the link to your ‘contact us’ page to your home page, you have bigger fish to fry."

Basic website usability needs to come before search engine optimization (SEO) concerns, say Enge and other SEO experts. All of the professional SEO in the world won’t help a site that appears instantly off-putting to visitors or doesn’t provide any of the functionality that it advertises.

Enge cites Flash, fully functional links, readability, and valid HTML code as frequently missed chances to improve the general usability of corporate websites, and says that these flaws can harm both bounce rate and search engine rating.
