Sometimes, concerns about business search engine optimization (SEO) pale into insignificance, and Google has accurately recognized one of those occasions: The company has shifted its focus in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Chile last week with a "person finder" search engine.

The search engine is designed to allow users to either find information on friends or relatives that might have been affected by the devastating quake – which measured a whopping 8.8 on the Richter scale – or to post information online for others. The website currently says that it is tracking "about 40,900 records."

CNET notes that the Chile page provides up-to-date information about further seismic activity in the country and gives contact information for the U.S. State Department for further data on Americans in the country. The tech news site said that the death toll was about 300 as of Sunday morning, but that it was expected to rise.

Google provided a similar service – which is still active – in the wake of a similar disaster in Haiti last month, and has posted numerous links encouraging its vast user base to donate to relief efforts in both areas.
