When companies consider a search engine optimization (SEO) campaign they factor in what people are looking for on their computer, but with more Americans turning to their phones to get online companies may want to consider a new SEO strategy.

According to a new survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, an increasing amount of Americans are getting online through wireless means which includes almost one-third (32 percent) who have used their phone to reach the internet.

"Mobile access strengthens the three pillars of online engagement: connecting with others, satisfying information queries, and sharing content with others," said John B. Horrigan, associate director of the Pew Internet Project. "With access in their pockets, many Americans are ‘on the fly’ consumers and producers of digital information."

The move to more access through mobile devices doesn’t appear to be slowing down either. According to a report last month from eMarketer, 73.7 million Americans are expected to access the web at least once per month by the end of this year (26.3 percent of the total cell phone population). By 2013 the company predicts that number will jump to 134.3 million (43.5 percent).

In a column earlier this year for Search Engine Land, Bryson Meunier said that people who access the web on the phones tend to search for things differently than those using more traditional means. With this in mind, websites may want to use search engine optimization (SEO) specifically for mobile users.
