Many search engine optimization (SEO) experts say companies should make sure their sites are optimized for search engines other than Google, and with recent figures from Nielsen it appears it’s becoming more important to make sure a site ranks high in searches for Microsoft’s Bing.

According to Nielsen, Bing remains in third place in the battle for search engine supremacy but the amount of searches being performed using the Microsoft product has been increasing. More than 1.1 billion searches were performed on Bing in August – a 22.1 percent increase over July.

These searches gave Bing 10.7 percent of the market, an increase from the 9 percent it held the previous month.

At the same time, Yahoo, Microsoft’s future partner in search, saw its searches fall 4.2 percent last month as the company holds on to 16 percent of the market with more than 1.7 billion searches last month.

But Google remains at the top of the list with almost 7 billion searches in August. With that number, Google saw a 2.6 percent while holding on to 64.6 percent of the search engine market.
